When is the last time you buy something that you don't know why you bought it in the first place? It is called impulsive buyer, you buy not because you want the item but because you are encourage buying. This behavior is so strong that one must master self to control it.
In the Philippines a buying behavior is known by everyone, it is called the colonial mentality.
"Colonial mentality is said to have its roots way back the Spaniards days."
Imagine seeing for the first time, white people dress in different attire.
The natives must have been puzzled; I think they have mix reaction, what will be the right attitude to the strangers, admiration or foe. Add the natural hospitality behavior of Pilipino and the foe judgment is overcome by admiration. As a result the colonial mentality was born.
"It's actually a mind set, a fad if you will."
Today, a product in the Philippines labeled made in the Philippines are struggling to products labeled in different country. In a sense it is also the very reason why pirated products are born.
"The colonial taste buds for imported product of Pilipino won't change for a long time."
Many businesses have battled this by "colonial coating" a product or name.
Boutiques, Fast food chain, and schools to name a few have adapted this. By offering products that has foreign looks and flavors, Pilipino appetite for imported goods is surely satisfied. Other Pilipino own business intentionally make there products in the Philippines and sell them abroad. After having a "foreign foothold" that's the time to sell in the Philippines. A Filipino looking at the product will recognize it as an imported product that has foreign origin, buys the product, and find it's made in the Philippines.
Businesses often choose a foreign sounding name for there company or product, a foreign sounding name is likely to succeed in the Philippines.
Think about this:
Hiring a psychologist to know how human buy is a good move for a business.
Knowing a persons mind set of buying will increase sale of product that in turn make a good profit. Not only knowing how the buyer buys but also what they want to buy.
On the lighter side:
Q: What is said to be made in the Philippines, but not a Pilipino product?
